Trout Fishing in Victoria Park

Species: Brown Trout

Method: Fly, Spin and Bait Fishing

Access: The Inangahua River runs parallel with State Highway 67 and State Highway 63, from which most access is gained.

Restrictions: The Inangahua River is open all year downstream of the Perserverance Bridge.  Above the Bridge: October 1 to April 30, four trout per day.

Fishing Tip: The middle section around Perservance Bridge is most suited to heavy nymphing, with deep runs.  Much of the fishing on the Inangahua is centered around Reefton.  Trout can rise well in summer – spin fishers do best when the river is clearing and fresh.

Access Points:

  1. Landing Creek

Park at the landing Creek Bridge on State Highway 63 22km north of Reefton.  The anglers’ access sign will indicate where to go.  Just upstream is a side road to the river.  Ask for land owner permission.

  1. Perservance Bridge

Perservance Road turns to the left off State Highway 63 16km south of Reefton.  Easy river access.

  1. Larry Creek and Bridge

The Larry’s Creek (Awarua) is signposted about 15km north of Reefton.  It’s a short walk down Larry’s Creek to the main river.  Larry’s Creek is well worth fishing, particularly early in the season before everyone else has visited it.  To access upriver, take the road just north of the bridge.  Stop at the picnic area and follow the track to the river.

  1. Brazil Road

Brazil Road is just over 2.5km north of the Waitahu Bridge.

  1. Waitahu Bridge

North of Reefton on State Highway 63.  From the bridge there is approx 2.5km of fishing down to the main river.  There is fishing upstream as far as you want to walk.

  1. O’Grady Road

Leads out onto the riverbed just upstream of the Waitahu mouth.  Turn-off for O’Gradys is just before the Waitahu Bridge.

  1. Andersons Road

Just north of Reefton on State Highway 63.  Drive around behind the golf course to the river.

  1. Waitahu River Road end

Take Gannon’s Road off State Highway 63 north of Reefton.  From the bridge upstream, 4x4 is recommended.  The road follows the river, so fishing options and access are simple.  For the fit, a walk upstream to the Montgomerie Stream can be well worth the effort.

  1. State Highway 7 above Reefton

Easy access to the river, as it flows beside State Highway 7.  There can be a lot of trout, though mainly small to medium size fish.
