Local folk try to keep this little bay secret – but here’s how to find it. Head for North Beach via Derby Street, turn left at Coates St and just before the Talleys Fish Factory turn on to the little road to Shingle Beach.
Shingle Beach
Shingle Beach is a little river hideway. Set back from the mouth of the mighty Buller River in a bay.
It is renowned as one of the best whitebaiting spots on the river, during the very short fishing season for this New Zealand delicacy, from September through to November 15th.
Jetskiers and surfers in the know, check out when the weather forecast is predicting large swells and head straight for Shingle Beach to catch enormous river waves – freshwater and surf! Can you believe it?
But Shingle Beach is also a great family spot for beautiful freshwater swimming and picnicking…and you can throw a line in to try to catch a cunning Kahawai or two – they fight like game fish and as long as you bleed them straight away to stop the flesh tainting and colouring, they are delicious.
