Ngakawau & Granity Beach
This long wild stretch of beach runs all the way from Waimangaroa to the Ngakawau River.
Known as Buller Bay these beaches offer wonderful solitude, a chance to fossick for gemstones and driftwood, miles of sand to run the dog and for the kids to play – and, wild seafood and great fishing.
As you walk up the beach from Granity, watch out for Chair Rock (the biggest LazyBoy you’ve ever seen), and Lover’s Rock which has a beautiful Merv Jury carving looking dreamily out to sea.
Granity Village and Ngakawau (named after the kawau/cormorant or shag) nestle beside Buller Bay offering great cafes, access to the high plateau via Millerton with amazing walks and mountain biking, and an arts and crafts trail. Don’t miss the Torea Cooperative Art and Craft Gallery in Granity, well-known sculptor Merv Jury and Anne and John Crawford’s internationally recognized paintings and pottery at Hector Pottery in Ngakawau.
You will find more information about the walks in this area under Charming Creek Walkway and Millerton.
You’ll also find a dairy in Ngakawau, several pubs and cafes, a variety of accommodation and really interesting bargains at the local Op Shop. The funds from this shop are used for all sorts of community essentials.
