Directions

Start at the Karamea Information Centre for this walk – you’ll need to get permission to cross private land. Then, head back along Bridge Street (the main road into Karamea from the south), cross the Karamea River Bridge and turn left on to Arapito Road. The Mt Stormy track entry access is off this road.

Mt Stormy Track

The track climbs steeply through native rainforest to a  high, exposed knife-edge ridge which links the forested top of the track to the top of the mountain.   The trail even above the bushline is marked with orange markers but you need to take care to locate and follow them.

Your reward for one of nature’s more challenging workouts is magnificent panoramic views of Karamea, the surrounding flats, and miles of forested wilderness beyond.

Do not attempt this walk in anything but great weather – at this height, temperature, wind and conditions can change rapidly – plus of course, there’s no reward as your views will be cloud concealed.  And, expect to get wet feet, as in all but long dry periods there will be streams to cross.

This walk is not recommended for people who are challenged by heights.
