An enjoyable evening stroll, beginning behind the Domain, or via the river access at the end of Wharf Road.
Karamea Riverbank & Estuary Walk
Water fun and brilliant birdwatching in the middle of town!
Follow along the river down to the mouth. Tide permitting, you can check out the birdlife and return through the estuary walkway, linking up with the end of Ray Street. DO watch the tide though – it comes in very quickly. Wharf Road’s name dates back to when Karamea had a river port – that was before the 1929 Murchison Earthquake which changed the ‘harbour’ for ever.
As well as bird watching at the estuary you can also fish or surf. And right next to the beach there’s a great little nine hole golf course!
If your golf’s a bit below par, just calm down and tune in to the Local Community Radio Station, which broadcasts 24 hours on 107.5 FM from a shed behind Rongo Backpackers…like Rongo, the station is a rainbow of music, opinion and comedy.
If that doesn’t work, maybe a cold beer at the ‘local’, on your way back at the end of the walk, will help. This little walk has everything, wild beauty with all the pleasures of modern life minutes away.
